Sleep is one of the most vital elements of our daily routine. If we do not get enough of it, we turn into horrible monsters with a war path set out to destroy everything and everyone. However, aside from the obvious that we know, did you know these other thirteen things about sleep?

1. When you first go to sleep, your brain begins to recharge, your body begins to release important hormones for your body, and your cells begin to repair themselves for more work tomorrow.
2. The sleep we require changes throughout our years of growing. For babies, it’s about 16 hours, children 3-12 require 10 hours, 13-18 require 10 hours, 19-55 require 8 hours, and over 65 most only need 6 hours.
3. Men often dream of other men more than 70% of the time! Women dream about men and women equally.
4. Humans will actually die from sleep deprivation before being deprived of food. Normally, it takes about 2 weeks to starve, however, within 10 days without sleep, you will die.
5. Dolphins are actually caught between staying awake and being asleep. Half of their brain shuts down while the other half monitors breathing cycles.
6. People who are afflicted with blindness can still see images in their dreams. They dream about experience that involves emotions, touch, smell, and sound.
7. British soldiers created the first method of staying awake for up to 36 hours without sleep. When they felt fatigued, they would slip on special visors that would emulate the brightness of a sunrise which would then force them to stay awake.
8. With people who are married, about 1 in 4 marriages sleep in separate beds.
9. Different sleeping positions can actually say a lot about your personality type!
10. About 12% of people dream only in black and white. This number changed severely when color television came out for the first time in history.
11. About 1 in every 50 teenagers still actually wet their beds, unfortunately. This is okay and is part of growing up.
12. Within the first 5 minutes of waking up from sleep, 50% of your dreams are forgotten. Within 10 minutes of staying awake, 90% of them are gone.
13. The animal that sleeps the longest period are koala with a stunning 22 hours a day of sleep. Below them are brown bats which sleep for 19.9 hours of the day and under them are pangolins who sleep about 18 hours a day.
